A look at some of our sessions

We've worked with photographers, families, brands, film crews and private clients on all kinds of sessions. Some have taken place around the stables, some in Centennial Park and others further afield. Each session is planned around the horses, the location and what you need from the shoot, with our handlers there throughout.

Most sessions take place at the Equestrian Centre or in Centennial Parklands, where the standard fees below apply. Off-site locations such as the beach are quoted separately.

Meet the horses available for sessions

We have a selection of horses and ponies that are suitable for photoshoots and filming. Each horse is selected based on their temperament, experience and how comfortably they handle cameras, unfamiliar people and standing for a session.

If you'd like to meet the horses, you're welcome to arrange a visit to the stables. Alternatively, let us know the size, colour or type of horse you're looking for and we can send through some options.

Once your horse has been confirmed, we need at least three days' notice if you would like to request a change. We will do our best to accommodate the request, but a different horse may not always be available.

Horse changes cannot be made on the day, as your booked horse will already have been prepared for the session.

Pricing

From $350 for one horse for one hour

Each horse can work for up to one hour during a session. The number of horses you need is therefore the main factor in the session price. The same rates apply to photography and filming.

What the session fee covers

The session fee includes preparation of the horse, up to one hour of session time and the time required for our staff to take the horse to and from the shooting location.

For a one-hour session, our horse and staff may be involved for close to three hours in total.

Off-site and larger productions

Sessions outside the Parklands, including beaches, private properties and wedding venues, are quoted individually. This allows us to account for transport, additional staff and travel time.

Larger crews and multi-day productions can also be arranged by quote.

Tell us what you're planning and we'll work through the details with you.

How it works

From your initial idea to the day of the shoot

There are a few steps to organise before the session. We'll help with the horse and session planning, while the Parklands permit needs to be arranged by you.

  1. Arrange your Parklands permit

Photography and filming in Centennial Parklands, including at the Equestrian Centre, requires a permit from Centennial Parklands.

The Parklands determines the permit conditions and any associated fees. We recommend applying early and checking exactly what your permit allows, including where the horse can be taken within the Parklands.

Once you receive the permit, send it to us so we can check the details before we plan the session.

  2. Plan the session with us

You can arrange to meet the horses at the stables, or let us know what sort of horse you're looking for and we can send through some photos.

We'll ask about the purpose of the shoot, the number of people involved, what you'd like the horse to do, whether a saddle is required and whether anyone will be riding.

  3. Confirm the date and time

Sessions are available on weekdays and must finish by 4pm. Our horses have regular lessons and routines outside of the session times, so we don't offer shoots from 4pm onwards.

A 50% deposit is required to confirm the booking.

  4. On the day

Please arrive at the Eastside stables 15 minutes before your scheduled start time. We'll confirm the final details, settle the remaining balance and prepare the horse before taking them to the agreed location.

Our handler stays with the horse throughout the session.

You are welcome to bring your own photographer, videographer or production crew.

Weekdays only, finishing by 4pm Riding is optional If weather affects an outdoor session, we'll reschedule it

Good to know

A few things to know before your session

These guidelines help us keep the session safe, practical and comfortable for everyone, particularly the horses.

If you're riding

  • A helmet must be worn whenever riding, regardless of the type of shoot.
  • Enclosed shoes or riding boots are required.
  • Bareback riding is not permitted.
  • Maximum rider weight is 85 kg.

What everyone wears

  • Everyone attending the session must wear enclosed shoes, including photographers and crew.
  • Clothing can suit your concept, provided it is safe around the horses and does not create a risk of the horse becoming frightened or someone tripping.
  • Riding is completely optional. Many photos can be taken from the ground.

Bridles and saddles

  • Horses working in Centennial Park must wear a bridle with a bit, in accordance with Parklands requirements.
  • A saddle is optional. Let us know the look you're after and we'll prepare the horse accordingly.
  • Tack cannot be removed once the horse is out in the Parklands.

Session times

  • Sessions are available on weekdays only.
  • Sessions must finish by 4pm.
  • Please arrive at the stables 15 minutes early so we can prepare and start on time.
  • Overtime is charged at $150 per 15 minutes.

On the day

A few things need to be agreed with us before the session:

You can bring Props and wardrobe items, provided these have been discussed with us beforehand Your own photographer, videographer or production crew Not permitted Drones around the horses Changing to a different horse on the day

Your Parklands permit

  • The Parklands sets the conditions for your permit, and these can vary between permits.
  • Please check the conditions carefully before the session.
  • If you're planning to take the horse off the horse track, confirm with the Parklands that your permit allows this.
  • If the permit conditions or Eastside's session requirements are breached, the session may be stopped immediately and the deposit will not be refunded.

One hour per horse

Each horse can work for a maximum of one hour during a session.

This gives the horse a reasonable amount of time to work before they need a break. If you need more than one hour of horse time, we can arrange a second horse to continue the session.

For this reason, our pricing is based on the number of horses rather than simply the total number of hours.

Questions

Before you make an enquiry

Here are some of the questions we receive most often.

Do I need a Parklands permit?

Yes. Every photoshoot and film shoot in Centennial Parklands needs a permit from the Parklands — that includes the Equestrian Centre, where our stables are. It's the first thing to sort out, because we can't plan logistics or quote your shoot until you have one.

Apply through Centennial Parklands, then email it to info@eastsideriding.com.au so we can verify it.

Who arranges and pays for the permit?

You do, directly to the Parklands. The permit fee is entirely separate from what you pay us, and the Parklands set both the price and the conditions — it isn't something Eastside has any control over or takes a cut of.

Can I ride the horse during the session?

You can, with conditions. A helmet is mandatory and so are enclosed shoes — no exceptions, whatever the shot calls for. Bareback riding is not permitted, and the maximum rider weight is 85 kg.

You're just as welcome not to ride. Many of the best frames are taken from the ground with the horse beside you.

Why is each horse limited to one hour?

Because after an hour a horse starts getting bored, fidgety and overwhelmed — which is unfair on the horse and unhelpful for your photographs. One hour is where a horse still looks and behaves its best.

If you need longer, we bring out a second horse to take over. That's why the fees are structured per horse rather than per hour.

How much does a session cost?

From $350 — that's $150 to prepare one horse plus $200 for the first hour with it. Each additional horse is $150 per hour or part thereof, and shoots located inside Centennial Park carry a $50 surcharge because a coach has to walk out to you on foot.

A 50% deposit confirms your date. Use the estimator above to price your own session.

Can we book on a weekend or after 4pm?

No on both counts. Shoots run on weekdays only, and never from 4pm onwards — weekends and late afternoons belong to lessons, rides and the horses' routine.

Can I use a drone?

No. Drones are not permitted around our horses during any shoot, regardless of what your Parklands permit allows.

What happens if it rains?

If the weather isn't fit for an outdoor shoot on the day, we'll reschedule you to another date. Do bear in mind that Eastside can't cover the cost of rescheduling your photographer or any other services you've booked around the shoot.

Can I change the horse I've booked?

We need at least three days' notice, and even then we can't always accommodate it — the horses have lessons and other commitments. Changes aren't possible on the day itself, since your horse will already have been prepared for you.

What happens if the session runs over time?

Overtime is charged at $150 per 15 minutes. It's worth planning your shot list against the hour you've booked — arriving 15 minutes early helps you use the full session.

Who owns the photographs?

Your photographer delivers your images. The booking is for the horse, handler and agreed session service, so Eastside does not guarantee a particular photographic or filming result.

If you use the images commercially or for marketing, Eastside must be credited. We may also ask your permission to use resulting images in our own marketing.

What is the deposit and cancellation policy?

A 50% deposit confirms your date and time, with the balance settled when you arrive on the day.

For sessions under two hours, cancel at least 24 hours beforehand for a full refund of the deposit. For sessions of two hours or longer, that notice period is 48 hours.
